FS Commander Networking

FS Commander Networking Flight Plans

This article assumes FS Commander is already successfully networked with FSX. The part that can be troublesome is the Load/Save flight plans across the network.

Quick summary: Do not use mapped drive letters. Enter UNC (Universal Naming Convention) paths directly in fsc.ini

My scenario:
  1. Two computers are identified on the network as WIN10 and NOVATEC
  2. WIN10 runs FSX Steam - NOVATEC runs FSX Boxed
  3. The flight plan files are stored on NOVATEC in C:\Users\Robert\Documents\Plan-G Files\Flight Plans\FSC
  4. FSX Boxed running on NOVATEC
  5. FSCommander running on WIN10
  6. I want to Save/Load flight plans across the network on NOVATEC
  7. On WIN10 the NOVATEC machine is mapped as N:

One would think that it was straight forward in FSC to set a path to the flight plans folder by simply using the N: drive. However FSC does not seem to recognise the mapped drive.

In FSC go to... Flight Plan... Save... Paths tab. I have my Flight Simulator X path set to the steam version on the local drive although I am actually flying on FSX which is on NOVATEC across the network using WideFSF.

If you use the Paths drop down box, the mapped network drives will most likely not appear.

FS Commander paths
This being the case an alternative is to enter the paths directly in fsc.ini as UNC paths e.g. \\NOVATEC in my case.
It's worth entering the UNC path in explorer to be certain it is connecting to the correct folder before editing the fsc.ini file.
On my system \\NOVATEC goes directly to the Plan-G Files on NOVATEC so I need to add \Flight Plans\FSC as below.
The fsc.ini file is in the root folder of the FSC install.

There are two further steps to ensure the drive can be reached across the network.

  1. Add a .bin file to each folder you wish to connect to. Create a text file with just one character in it is sufficient and save it say as test.txt then rename it to test.bin
  2. Make sure you have all the folders and files with the correct permissions for you to be able access them e.g. Full Control Everyone which is explained here - Tileproxy Installation.
